Reading and writing are of paramount importance at North and South Cowton Community Primary School. Using a variety of carefully graded reading schemes we aim to help children become fluent and independent readers. Children also have the opportunity to select from a wide range of stories, poetry and non-fiction books. Our school library is regularly used. The reference section aims to encourage children in the use of a classification system, enabling them to locate information to support other areas of the curriculum.

Children are given the opportunity to write for a wide range of purposes and audiences. Opportunities are given to develop the skills of grammar, punctuation, handwriting and spelling.

High priority is also given to the development of speaking and listening.

Collaborative Literacy

This week, during literacy lessons, class 2 have been planning and writing stories for younger children.  They have looked at a variety of books for a younger age to get an idea of the type of story and how they are written.

We have had some fantastic ideas which have resulted in some great stories.  These stories were shared with class 1 yesterday, who seemed to thoroughly enjoy them.
